diagram: ‘unprofessional’ – rigging a microwave
“hey can you rig a microwave?”
summary
Probably one of the more memorable requests to slide through this year, this was a cool shot to create!
By pulling the back-plate off an old microwave, we were able to position our camera “inside” the microwave looking out the door.
A low boy combo with a pigeon plate acted as our shelf. A bunch of sandbags kept the base sturdy, and a ratchet strap cinched the microwave to the pigeon plate.
After that was secure, it was on to lighting the scene!
The Intellytech Mega-8 from the dining room scene was still in play here, so we used that as our key on the talent himself. We had to flag that from spilling into the back of the microwave though, so there’s a 2×3 flag in between them.
An Aputure MC pro inside the microwave has some gaff tape on the far side from the camera to flag it off our talent, but still light the interior of the microwave.
Lastly, an MC pro in the kitchen provides the ratio and color temperature to the background, and a kicker to our talent!
